This tutorial assumes you know the basics of the program and the tools.
It is meant to show you the basic methods I used to create my image
without giving exact settings for each tool's panel.
It is written for PhotoImpact 7
We will make the paper wrapper first. Open a canvas and choose the path tool. Select 2D, a dark brown color, and Custom shape. Select the shape named "Shape Edges". Now select the transform tool and select rotate in virtual 3D. Rotate the object so it looks like you are viewing part of the top. |
Right click and convert to an object. Using the eraser tool remove the the inner circle. Now duplicate the object and pull it down a few clicks with the arrow keys. (When you have a group of ten or so, select all objects and merge as a single object and use this larger one to duplicate). Repeat this until you have your paper wrapper as tall as you would like. |
Make the top most piece of the object active and use the Dodge tool to lighten the rim color. Merge all the pieces together and use the Burn tool to darken the valleys of the flutes and the Dodge tool to put highlight on point of the flute. Duplicate this piece as you will need two. |
You now need to make two parts from this object. You can find a wonderful tutorial by Deb DeHaven on this method here:Mask Mode Selections. Using the selection Lasso tool. Click on the mask mode icon and carefully draw around the front of the candy wrapper. Selection invert and delete. Save this as your wrapper front. |
Using the duplicate original repeat this technique for the wrapper back making the part that would be the bottom of the wrapper inside - rounded. Then using the smudge and burn tool make the inside bottom dark. Save this part as your wrapper back. |
Now some fun begins. Lets make candy! Using the path tool, 3D, shape circle, make a brown sphere.
Edit that sphere to have a flat bottom.
With the path tool, 3D, line, select a complimentary color and the spline tool and decorate your chocolate. |
Select the bottom most strips of icing
and click the Z Merge tool and give them a small positive number.
Then select the upper icing strips and give them a small negative number. Just enough to give a melted together look. |
Merge the icing pieces and convert to an object and erase any stray edges at the outside of the icing. |
Make different candy pieces chosing a slightly different color for each
and different icing styles as well. Some can be make to looked like they
are dusted with powdered sugar or cinnamon by using the Particle gallery, Snow.
Extra realism is enhanced by careful attention to detail. Now is the time
where I added some extra highlights by using the paint tool's airbrush in
Mode so I could adjust the transparency.
When you have all the chocolates made to your satisfaction put them together with the back wrapper piece on the bottom, the candy piece and then the wrapper front. The candy itself would be casting a shadow onto the inside of the wrapper. And, the wrapper would cast a shadow onto the candy so apply those now. Save all your assembled candies and wrappers and we will go to Part two...making the heart box. |
