Sinedot birthstone angel
PhotoImpact 7.0

Level: Intermediate
needed items: Sinedots II filter
zip file versions, 6 and 7 compatible.
Description: Create a birthstone angel for your friends and family with Sinedots II.
Preparation. Download the zip file for this tutorial. It contains my cfg file for the angel parts plus a birthstone and chain ufo, and a background on which to display your angel. Move the angeldkd.cfg file to your filter folder in the same folder where you have your sinedot II installed.  Move the other files to the folder of your choice.

For this tut we will be using 3 canvases with a black background. These canvases will be filled with a sinedot preset and converted to gray scale. They will become our masks for the different body parts of the angel.

Before you start, go to selection in the menu bar and make sure "preserve base image" has a check beside it. If you are using pi 6 and it does not have a check beside it, click on your general selection tool and go to selection and click "preserve base image" to place a check there. Other versions can simply click preserve base image in the selection menu to toggle it back and forth.
Also go to format/ data type, and unclick create new image.

Open a new canvas, black canvas color, 100 X 100. We will use this canvas to make a mask for the head of our angel. Go to effect/ sinedots II, and open angeldkd.cfg. Click the down arrow and select angel_head. Click ok. Now if you wish you can shape the head a little better by changing to the transform/ perspective tool. Set the background color to black first and then use the perspective tool to narrow the chin a little.
Go to format/data type/ gray scale (8 bit). Minimize this canvas for use later as a mask.
Open a new canvas, again, black canvas, this time 300 X 300.
Go to effects/ dragonfly/ sinedots II. Click the down arrow beside the preset name and click angel_petticoat.
Click ok to apply it to the canvas. Click on the transform tool again, which should still be on the perspective tool, and use it to narrow the top to make the sinedot look like a skirt. Go to format/ focus and focus at level one. See example. Go to format/ data type/ gray scale (8 bit). Minimize this canvas too.
Open a new canvas, again, black canvas, this time 300 X 300.
Go to effects/ dragonfly/ sinedots II. Click the down arrow beside the preset name and click angel_skirt. Click ok to apply it to the canvas. Click on the transform tool again, which should still be on the perspective tool, and use it to narrow the top to make the sinedot look like a skirt. Try to keep the top about the same width as you left the petticoat. See example. Go to format/ focus and focus at level one. Go to format/ data type/ gray scale (8 bit).

Press Control D to duplicate this canvas. We will use this duplicate to make the angel wings. Click the transform tool and under rotate and flip, click Rotate left 90.
Rotate 45 degrees counter clockwize.
Go to format/ image size and resize this canvas to 50%. Minimize this canvas also.
Now we have all the masks ready and it is time to assemble the angel.
Open a new canvas, black background, 500 X 500.

Go to selection/ import selection. Choose untitled - 1. (In pi 7 you will not be able to see a preview of the mask you will be using, so it is important to know from which canvas you want to apply the mask before you click import selection. If you started this tutorial with pi just opened and with no canvases open, the head will be untitled - 1.) Click ok.
Right click, and convert to object. Go to edit/ fill and fill the new object with white. Press the space bar!

Go to selection/ import selection. Choose untitled - 2, which should be the petticoat of the angel. Click ok.
Right click, and convert to object. Go to edit/ fill and fill with white. Move your petticoat down near the bottom of the canvas. Adjust the top of the petticoat to fit the head with the perspective tool if needed.
Press the space bar!

Go to selection/ import selection. Choose untitled - 3. Right click, and convert to object. Go to edit/ fill and fill with the color of the birthstone for the month you've chosen. Click the pick tool and click the underlined arrow pointing upwards to bring this new object to the top. Move it to place it on top of the petticoat. If needed use the perspective transform tool to make the skirt the same width at the top as the petticoat.
Go to selection/ import selection. Choose untitled - 4. Right click, and convert to object. Go to edit/ fill and fill with the same color with which you filled the skirt. Duplicate this object, and with the transform tool, rotate by degree 22.5% clockwise. Click on the new wing section and drag it so that the top wing fills the gap between the two wings of the first section so that it matches this example.
Hold down control while clicking on the other wing section in the layer manager. Right click and click group. Hold down control while dragging to duplicate this group. Use the transform tool set on resize and with the lock on, or with the shift key held down for earlier versions to make this section a little smaller than the first group. Right click and merge as single object. Click rotate and flip, flip vertically. Move it into place as in this sample.
Select all wing sections and merge as a single object. Control drag to duplicate . Use the transform tool set on resize and with the lock off or shift not held down for earlier versions to make this section a little narrower than the back sections. Go to edit/ fill and fill this section with white. See example.
Select both wing sections. Right click and merge as a single object.
Control drag to duplicate your wings. We will use this to make the wings on the other side.
Click the transform tool and under rotate and flip, and click flip horizontally.
Use the pick tool to arrange all pieces so they form your angel. Select both wing sections, and go to object/ arrange/ send to back. See example.
Open birthstones.ufo or birthstones.psd and select the birthstone and the chain. Drag them to the angel canvas. Use the transform tool to resize the gem to an appropriate size for your angel's necklace. Arrange them at the proper place to form a necklace. You may want to use the quick color controls to lighten the skirt section of the angel so that the birthstone stands out more.
Fill the canvas with the background of your choice and if you like, type the name of the person for whom you are making the angel and his or her birth date. For best results, the background needs to be a dark color that will contrast with the white of the angel's head and petticoat. I have included this background in the zip file if you would like to use it. If you would like to see my finished work full size, just click on the image to zoom in.
Variations: Use a gold fill for the overskirt to make a Christmas angel. Or add objects or tubes to the image representing the month of the birthdate.  Flag for July, Hearts for Feburary, etc.
I hope you enjoy this tutorial!
