Description: Frame your favorite image with this classy frame.

  • Open a suitable image in pi. A suitable image is one that you want only one face or area to show. The area needs to have room around it for the rest of the framing effects. Crop the image to a square with the area to be framed in the center. If you like you may use the one painted by one of the old masters, David Brackman. This image is now public domain. I have already cropped this one for you. If the area you want to frame can't fit in a circle you could use an oval for the selection. Or if you want to make the frame unique you can use one of the custom shapes for the path tool. The sky's the limit!

Use the path tool to draw a circle on your image the size of the area you want to frame. Right click, align/ center both. (I used a path circle rather than a selection at this point because I could use the center commands to get it perfectly centered.) Change mode on the path circle to selection.
Right click, invert selection. Now the area outside the circle is selected. Press control d at the same time to duplicate the window at this point.
Go to effects/ blur & sharpen/ gaussian blur. Set the variance to 24, and click ok.
Go to effect/ Fun house/ Cirquelate.
Click on your paint tool and grab the airbrush from the drawer. Set up the color to a complimentary color to your frame section. I used navy blue here. Set up the size to 30 and leave other settings default. Go to effect, paint on edges. At this point I used the quick color commands to add a little blue to my frame just to set it off from the picture a bit more.

Activate the second canvas created beforehand.
Right click, border, 5 pixels, inward, circle, 0 soft edge.
Go to edit, trace, selection marquee, and click ok. Change mode from horizontal deform to 3d round, and apply a gold preset. Drag this new border to the first canvas or cut and paste. Then right click, align, center both.

Go to format/ expand canvas, and set the amount to 20 with expand sides equally checked. Press the space bar to deselect the border.
Right click, all, right click border/ 20 pixels/ inward/ box. Click ok.
Go to edit/ fill, and click the gradient tab. Which gradient you choose is dependent on the colors in your picture. Choose your gradient by clicking the edit button. I used the blue one, 004, in the magic gradient section, Mode 10. If you can't find a gradient color complimentary to your picture, you can fill again from the color tab and the merge set to colorize. Just pick a color from your image. :)

Go to effect/ video rave/ tiled glass. Set the width and height to 42, but leave the transparency as is.

Go to effect/ simple/ pizza slice mirror. This will even out your frame and make the blocks symmetric.
Activate the air brush again, and change the size to 10. Shift p to paint on edges of the tiled frame.

Go to format/ expand canvas, expand sides equally checked. Set the first box to 5, and click ok.
Press the space bar so that nothing is selected.
Right click, click all. Right click border, Border width 5, Direction, inward, shape box.
    Click ok.
Go to edit/ trace selection marquee. Click ok. Change mode from horizontal deform to 3d round. Your gold preset should still be active.

If you want a little more decoration on your frames, open the tileframecorners.ufo from the zip file and arrange the parts around the center of the image. I made these corners from the designer mix dingbat which you can download from House of Lime.

That's it! I hope you've enjoyed this tutorial.
