This tutorial will show you how to create color sketch image from any photograph. Although this tutorial was created using the demo of version 7, it can easily be done in 6 also.

For this tutorial I'll be using one of the photos from the fill gallery in PhotoImpact 7, but this effect will work well on any number of photos.
If you have PI 7, and want to follow along exactly, go to your easy palette, fill gallery, photos tab, and click on mountains, and drag it to your workspace. this will cause the original photo to open in its own canvas.
At this point I used the crop tool to make the image smaller, but whether you need to do so depends on the photo you are using.
1. Open your photo and control + D to duplicate.
2. Go to effects/special/monochrome.
3. Go to format/level. Change the level to 6 and press ok.
4. Go to effect/natural painting/colored pen.
5. Set the level to 68. press ok
6. Activate your duplicated image. Click on the selection tool, and grab the lasso from the "drawer"
7. In the attribute bar, set the soft edge to 50. Roughly outline an area on the colored image to select it. Stay at least 50 pixels away from the edge. Copy your selection.
8. Activate your black and white canvas. Right click and paste your colored selection onto your black and white canvas. Use the arrow keys so that it aligns properly with the bottom image. If you need to you can change the transparency on the top layer so that you can see the lines underneath to properly align it.
9. If you want to make it look like a partially painted picture, go to effect/natural painting water color. Click the options button and set the moisture level on 58. Click ok Right click and merge all. Save as usual.
