For this tutorial
I'll be using one of the photos from the fill gallery in PhotoImpact
7, but this effect will work well on any number of
photos. If you have PI 7, and want to
follow along exactly, go to your easy palette, fill gallery, photos
tab, and click on mountains, and drag it to your workspace. this
will cause the original photo to open in its own canvas. At
this point I used the crop tool to make the image smaller, but
whether you need to do so depends on the photo you are
using. |

1. Open your photo and
control + D to duplicate. 2. Go to
effects/special/monochrome.
3. Go to
format/level. Change the level to 6 and press ok. |

4. Go to
effect/natural painting/colored pen.
5. Set the level
to 68. press ok |

6. Activate your
duplicated image. Click on the selection tool, and grab the lasso
from the "drawer" |

7. In the attribute bar,
set the soft edge to 50. Roughly outline an area on the colored
image to select it. Stay at least 50 pixels away from the edge. Copy
your selection. |

| 8. Activate your black
and white canvas. Right click and paste your colored selection onto
your black and white canvas. Use the arrow keys so that it aligns
properly with the bottom image. If you need to you can change the
transparency on the top layer so that you can see the lines
underneath to properly align it. |

| 9. If you want to make it
look like a partially painted picture, go to effect/natural painting
water color. Click the options button and set the moisture level on
58. Click ok Right click and merge all. Save as usual. |
