Needed files: Lace Doily

This tutorial is written to go along with many fine tutorials written that show you how to make some little thing like a basket or a bonzai tree or any small thing that may be displayed on a table.

Sometimes the way we display the piece is as important as the actual object we are displaying.

Please understand that since this tutorial is meant to go along with other tutorials, the exact dimensions you will use may be quite different than the ones in this tutorial. The directions will work for whatever you need it for so feel free to use those that will fit your piece.

1. Start with a canvas that will fit your piece. For this tutorial use 350 X 400. Select single color in the new dialog box.

2. Go to the easy palette, gallery section, filter tab. Click the + to expand the tab, and click "light". Right click L05, and click "Modify properties and apply".
Using the preview window in the upper left corner change the options until you are satisified with them. The idea here is to create the effect of a light shining on a wall behind your piece. Change the exposure to 87 and the ambient light to 46%. point to the white square beside ambient and click to change the color of the light. The color used here is the preset color in the bottom row second from the right.
Modify the light direction by pointing to the red square marked here and dragging it straight up and down. Point to one of the blue squares so that your cursor looks like a hand, and drag it until you are satisfied. You can also plug in the skew, spread, distance and elevation numbers you see here in this screen shot.
Click ok. If you are not satisfied with the color you got, use the quick color commands to add a little blue or lighten or darken it.
3. Now again in the easy palette, go to the painting gallery, and double click decoupage. Also double click faceted glass.
4. Click the path tool and select the ellipse. Draw a long skinny oval on your canvas in 2d mode. Fill the oval with a wood fill. Duplicate this oval by holding down control while dragging. Select the oval on the bottom and change the mode to 3d round, border 18 and depth 30. Arrange this oval slighltly lower than the duplicate oval so that it appears to be the rim of the table.
5. Change the shape to rectangle, and draw a long tall rectangle for the post of the table. Draw it long enough so that the bottom bevel of the post is off canvas. Change the border and depth to 30. Right click, click arrange/send to back. Move the post if necessary so that it is centered on the canvas from side to side.
6. Right click/select all objects. To change all of these path items to image objects at the same time, go to format/tone map. Change the midtone to 1 or -1. All of your path objects are now image objects and you can use tools on them you couldn't otherwise.

7. With the pick tool, click on the table top to select it. Go to edit/fill, and click the gadient tab. Fill the table with a two color gradient of black and white with a transparency of 72%. You will find this setting in the lower right corner of the fill box. Now the table is looking properly shaded with the areas farthest away a darker shade. However, the table top can be improved by using the quick color controls under the color palette to increase the contrast. So click the plus beside the black and white circle at the bottom once or twice until you like the appearance of the table.
8. Click the color rim and the minus beside the sun in the quick color controls to darken it. Click the minus twice.
9. Click on the post of the table. We will add a shadow that falls on the post from the table.
Click the retouch tools and select the burn tool. Add a little shading right under the table to create the shadow. Also drag the burn tool along both sides of the post to create the illusion that it is rounded.
10. Use a lace doily to decorate your table. Here I have used one of mine, debslace18.tub which you can download here.
Click the stamp tool, then import picture tube. if needed. Browse to find the tube, and click ok. Click on the canvas once to add the doily to your picture.
11. Click on the transform tool and click the top middle square and drag it downwards. If needed to make the doily show around the sides of your display piece, make it wider too by dragging the right middle square outwards.
12. Repeat step 7 on the lace, again increasing the contrast afterwards. Otherwise your lace will be gray.
13. Place your display piece on your canvas, and if you haven't done so beforehand, merge as a single object. Right click and add a perspective shadow accepting the default settings.
