Creating Bows (easy method)
PhotoImpact 5.0

Press Ctrl + N to open a new image.
Accept the default size so you will have plenty of working room.

Click on the path tool, and in the attribute tool bar, choose the color for your bow.

(It may be helpful here, if you are making this bow to combine with your ribbon, to drag your previously saved ribbon from your easy palette to the canvas. Right click and ungroup the parts of the ribbon.  This will set your color to the correct matching color.)

Under mode, select 3d round and set the width to 16.

Now click on the rectangle under the word "shape" and click again on custom shape.

Make sure you are in the "frame shapes" tab and scroll until you find round edges 3.   Double click it.

Click and drag on the canvas until you have a shape about this size.
Click on the transformer tool, and then on the rotate & flip button in the attributes toolbar.   Click again on rotate Left 90 degrees.

Now, in your easy palette, click on the galleries button, and click on material.  If the view is not already expanded, and there is a + beside the words Material Gallery, click on the plus to open it.
Click on the reflection section and scroll until you find Ribbons 1.
Double click it and it will be applied to the rounded edges shape.

Now change to the bump section, and find Diagonal 1.  Right click on it, and click again on "Modify properties and apply".

Set the options as you see them here.  Uncheck "Use bitmap as reflection"  Click ok and the bump will be applied to your shape.

Right click on your shape and click again on duplicate.  Click again on the Rotate & Flip button, and click on Flip Horizontally. Line the second loop up with your first loop.
Now change to your path tool again, and click on the rectangle under the word shape, and click on custom shape.
Find wave 2 in the frame shapes tab group, and double click it.
Draw a small square about the size of the one shown.  If you get it the wrong size, change to the transformer tool and make it wider or higher.  Move it off to the side for now.
If you don't have the path tool selected, click on it now.  Click on the little man under the word shape, and click on custom shape.  This time, change to the Pattern shapes tab group, and find the raindrop shape.
Right click on the color box and click again on "Windows color picker".  Choose a color several shades darker than the one you used for the loops. Under Mode, select 3D trim from the drop down list.

In your easy palette, click on the bump section of the material gallery, and double click Remove bump.  Draw a  small raindrop about this size.
Click on the square in the center of the right side of the raindrop, and without letting go of the mouse button, drag it to the left so that the raindrop is thinner and resembles this image.
Click on the transformer tool, and then on Rotate & Flip in the attributes toolbar.  Click on rotate Left 90 degrees.
Drag the raindrop shape to the right side loop, and line it up on top of the loop with the arrow keys.  Now click on the rotate freely button in the attribute toolbar, and rotate it as explained in the ribbon tutorial so that it lines up correctly and looks like  the back of the loop.  Don't worry if the tip sticks out a little.  This part will be covered up by the knot.
When you get it lined up correctly with the rotate freely tool, right click on it and click again on duplicate.  Click on the  Rotate & Flip button and then on Flip horizontally.
Line this new object up with the other loop.
Now drag the wave 2 shape you made earlier over to the loops and position it in the center of the two loops.  Click on the pick tool and in the attribute toolbar, click on the bring to front button.  It looks like an underlined arrow pointing up.
Use the arrow keys to position it correctly.
When you are satisfied with the positioning of the parts of the bow, click on the layer manager button in your easy palette, and hold down Ctrl button while clicking on each part of your bow.  When all parts are selected, right click on one of the thumbnails and click again on group.  Drag your new bow to the easy palette, select a category to store it in, and press ok.
Now drag two copies of your ribbon objects into the work space, and rotate them with the rotate freely button in the transformer attribute toolbar so that they form a 90 degree angle.  Drag your ribbon to the place where the two ribbons meet. Group all and save to your easy palette to be ready to apply to your graphics.

You may click on the bow to download a ufo kit for this project.
