Let's Make a Lamp

This lamp isn't hard to make but there are several steps to follow. There will be 3 different sections/tables: Basic Globe Shapes, Fluted Top, and Hardware. I'd say the most time consuming part of this tutorial is making the fluted top for the lamp. The rest will be a breeze..*smile*....

Here are 2 tiles for you to choose from for the fill that we will be using (unless you want to use one of your own). The first tile is one that I made from a picture from the PhotoImpact Users Photo Gallery under "Florals" and it's the one that I'll be using for this tutorial. The other one is a background tile that I downloaded from a site a long time ago.

Floral

Roses

Open a new canvas 300x300. I found that it was easier to distinguish the shapes having a color other than white on the new canvas since the fill tile is so faded, but that's up to you.

1. Set the shape of the Path Drawing Tool to "Ellipse".
2. Set the mode to "3D Round".
3. Click on "Material" then "File", click on the tile that you want
to use as the fill for the lamp.
4. Border/Depth should be, border 30 depth 5.
NOTE: I don't combine any objects till I'm finished working on the whole graphic, but I constantly SAVE as a .ufo file. So please don't take the chance of the puter freezing up or anything and losing everything that you have done. SAVE as you go...*S*

File/Save As: Browse to a folder where you would like to save it.I made a folder on the desktop called "Working". Make sure that .UFO is selected as the file type. Click on Save. When you are asked about compression type, choose NONE

I. Basic Globe Shapes
Make your first shape similar to the top shape. Then change the "Shape" option to "Circle", but keep all the other settings the same. Now draw the second shape so it looks like the bottom one.

Change the "Shape" option to Custom Shape/Pattern Shapes/Plaque #5. Go to "Material/Border/Depth": Border 1 Depth 1. Now draw a shape similar to this. While it's still selected, click on "Edit/Rotate&Flip/Flip vertically".

Go to the "Tranform Tool/Perspective. Drag the bottom right corner inwards, so that it looks like this.

Now click on the "Transform/Resize" optionand pull the bottom center down until the shape looks like this. Then place it on the top globe shape like this. Next, we'll be working on the fluted top.

2. Fluted Top

This will be the most time consuming part of this whole tutorial. Remember to Save, Save, Save. Trust me, you will not want to have to redo this part.

Left click on the "Color" box on the attribute bar. Choose the lightest gray color (last colunm, 4th one down). Click on the "Path Drawing Tool/Shape/Ellipse". Now draw a shape like this one.
NOTE:This shape must be very narrow from top to bottom, because it will be easier to make it look fluted.

Place it on the top globe like this.

We're going to change the "Shape" again, back to the "Custom Shapes/Pattern Shapes/Plaque #5". We'll change the color to white. Border/Depth should be, Border 10 Depth 10.
Now draw the shape this size. Go to "Edit/Rotate&Flip/Flip Vertically". Drag this shape and place it on the gray shape (anywhere on that shape, we'll be moving it to the correct spot next.)
Now we're going to zoom in on the image. Hold the letter "Z" down and "left" click 3 or 4 times. Now move the shape to the bottom center of the gray oval shape, like shown.

When I was doing this I would zoom in and work on the detailing but zoom back out to see what it looked like at the actual view size. I found that going back and forth like this really helped me see how much to rotate or resize any of these shapes. Maybe doing it the same way will help you also.
Now duplicate that shape and flip it vertically, duplicate it once. Place one on each side of the first shape.
Duplicate each of the three pieces once. Place them at the top of the gray oval shape like this.
Once you have these pieces placed on the gray oval shape, you may have to use the "Transform Tool/Rotate Freely" option to fit these shapes around the oval. This is something that you will have to play with till you feel that you have it the way you want it.

If you notice on mine, you can see some of the green color peeking thru, don't concern yourself if some of this shows, once you zoomed back out and the image is much smaller, these little imperfections will not show up. If you look closely at the graphic at the top of this page, you can hardly see them even though I know they're there..*smile*
Click on the bottom left shape and duplicate. While it is still selected, go to "Edit/Rotate&Filp/Rotate Left 90(degrees)". Place the shape on the left side of the gray oval shape.
Duplicate that side shape and "Flip Horizonally". Place it on the right side of the gray oval shape.
Select the left side piece and use the "Transform Tool/Resize" option. Make it smaller, so that it will fit between the upper and lower shape.
Your image should look similar to this one.

Whew! We're done with the fluted part of the lamp!!
Ok, now we'll be adding the hardware to the lamp on the next page
